Channel 4 Dispatches Growing up Poor
In Britain today more than 4 million children are growing up in poverty.
Almost 1 in 3 children in the UK are now growing up poor, like Cameron and his two sisters whose family rely on a food bank to help fill the fridge.
“We try not to eat a lot in one day, even though most of us are really hungry.”

More people than ever are turning to food banks
More people than ever are being forced to turn to food banks, after welfare problems over the last six months have led to the steepest increase in emergency food parcel handouts in five years, according to the anti-poverty campaign the Trussell Trust. Read more here. The Guardian 13 Nov 2019
Ferocious Dog are hosting a pop up food drop for Holme Valley Foodbank at The Picturedrome!
It’s this Friday 13 September from 730pm at Holmfirth Picturedrome.
Ferocious Dog have been described as England’s best folk-punk band – a full-on six-piece band that encompass folk infused with rock, reggae and Celtic vibrations.
Lead singer Ken Bonsall said “Ferocious Dog are proud to be working with the Holme Valley Food Bank at our show at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth on Friday night as part of our More Fake News & Propaganda Tour.”
Our lovely volunteers will be on hand to welcome donations of food – eg tinned meat, tinned, fish, tinned veg, pasta, rice, instant mash, biscuits – or cash.
A big Thank You to Ken Bonsall and Ferocious Dog for working with us to collect food for those in need. Wishing you a great tour, a warm welcome in Holmfirth and a fantastic audience at the fabulous Picturedrome.
Report of the Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights
The Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Philip Alston, undertook a mission to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 5 to 16 November 2018. Although the United Kingdom is the world’s fifth largest economy, one fifth of its population (14 million people) live in poverty, and 1.5 million of them experienced destitution in 2017. Policies of austerity introduced in 2010 continue largely unabated, despite the tragic social consequences. Close to 40 per cent of children are predicted to be living in poverty by 2021. More people than ever need help from Holme Valley Foodbank. We have been helping local people who are in crisis for a number of years and 2019 has certainly has been our busiest year ever. We are seeing more and more individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet, and that struggle becomes worse during the school holidays.

Poverty in the UK is ‘systematic’ and ‘tragic’, says UN special rapporteur
Prof Alston said he had heard accounts of people choosing between heating their homes or eating, children turning up to school with empty stomachs, increased homelessness and food bank use, and “story after story” of people who had considered or attempted suicide. Read more BBC 22 May 2019
More than a million Yorkshire folk are living in poverty
Children are the most likely to be hit by deprivation, with nearly one in every three (30%) living in relative poverty. That means around 300,000 children across Yorkshire are living below the breadline. Huddersfield Examiner 2 April 2019

We’re facing exceptional demand
The Holme Valley Food Bank is experiencing exceptional demand levels. The Financial Times (15th October 2017) reported that demand for Food Banks rose 52% after universal credit rollout. Whatever the cause of the rise we have seen this year we must be ready to meet the needs of those in difficulty.
